Dante Dartmouth and Dante Lab Reader
The Consolation of Philosophy before Dante’s Divine Comedy provides the philosophical and moral framework that underpins much of Dante’s vision. Boethius’ dialogue between himself and Lady Philosophy explores the nature of fortune, free will, virtue, and the ultimate pursuit of divine wisdom—concepts Dante transforms into poetic form through his journey from Hell to Paradise. Boethius’ emphasis on the soul’s ascent from worldly illusion toward eternal truth anticipates Dante’s own spiritual pilgrimage, while his synthesis of classical reason and Christian faith directly shaped the intellectual and moral universe in which Dante wrote. Understanding Boethius therefore deepens one’s grasp of Dante’s allegories, his moral judgments, and his portrayal of divine justice.
